Inside an Avatar-themed Airbnb in Miami: what you can borrow for your property
Some Airbnbs get booked for their location, and others for the experience. This Miami property is firmly in the second group: a five-bedroom house inspired by the movie Avatar, where every space takes guests to Pandora. Cecia from La Academia de Host showed us around. Here's what it has and, above all, which ideas you can use in your own Airbnb, even if it isn't themed.
Touring the property
Shared spaces
- A large living room for families, with scenes from the movie on the walls.
- Game room with a pool table, basketball, ping pong and foosball.
- A big kitchen with a large fridge and a coffee station with a coffee maker and mugs.
- Dining area for large groups, decorated like Pandora's trees.
- A private cinema hidden behind a door, with big sofas and popcorn and candy machines. The obvious plan: watch Avatar as a family.
- Laundry with a washer and dryer, ideal for stays longer than five days.
The backyard
A pool with a hot tub, loungers to enjoy the Miami sun and a view of a lake with ducks. A space to unwind that, with kids around, also calls for clear safety rules.
Five bedrooms, five experiences
- Avatar room: double bed, lighting in the movie's colors, a TV and a bathroom with 3D decor you can touch.
- Master suite: "out of this world" decor from ceiling to walls, a very spacious bed, a full-length mirror, a sofa with a view, a reading nook and plants. Bathroom with a jetted tub and double sinks.
- Jellyfish room: two beds, special lighting, a lamp that charges your phone and a bathroom with wallpaper, a tub and double sinks.
- Bunk room: sleeps up to five, with spots to charge phones and murals of the main characters.
- Floating mountains room: king bed, walk-in closet and a view of Pandora's iconic floating mountains.
Why a themed Airbnb works
- You stop competing on price. When your property has an identity, guests don't compare it with the rest: they pick it.
- Free marketing. Guests photograph and share unique spaces on social media, and every post advertises your listing.
- It's memorable and repeatable. Immersive experiences create guests who come back and recommend you.
- It attracts families and groups, who stay more nights and value spaces like the game room and the cinema.
8 details you can borrow even if your Airbnb isn't themed
- A coffee station with a coffee maker, mugs, coffee and tea.
- Dispensers for shampoo, conditioner and body wash in every bathroom. Cecia calls them "very important for guests".
- A full-length mirror in each main bedroom.
- Chargers or charging lamps next to every bed.
- A washer and dryer if you host stays of five nights or more.
- An Instagrammable corner: a mural, a textured wall or a standout piece.
- Warm, ambient lighting, not just the ceiling light.
- An entertainment space (games, a big TV, a movie area) if your guests are families or groups.
Before you invest in a theme
A theme this ambitious takes investment. Before deciding:
- Make sure your market has demand from families or large groups.
- Estimate how much you could raise your rate versus non-themed comparables.
- Invest first in the pieces with the most impact: the bed, the sofa and the space guests see when they walk in.
